Merlot and Madison County

Have you ever experienced that one true love of your life – the one that could not happen for some reason or another?

Set in the 1960’s in Madison County, Iowa, The Bridges of Madison County brings forth extra-marital affairs, true love, family life, and tough decisions.

Francesca Johnson, a mother and housewife, stays behind while her family goes away on a trip. During this time she meets Robert Kincaid, a traveling photographer who arrives in Madison County to photograph covered bridges in that area. The attraction between the two adults is so strong, they partake in a love affair. Their lives become intertwined to the point they must make some challenging, life-altering decisions. (If I keep going I will give out spoilers…)

~~~~~ This is one of my all-time favorite books, and movies. It is worthy of being paired with the soft, smooth, and elegant Merlot. A book about extra-marital affairs? That’s deep. (another glass, please) When you look at the situation through the lovers eyes, you see a deep, heart-wrenching story about soul mates. The taste of plums, black cherries, and chocolate blending on your palette give you the warmth and comfort to experience the emotions of Francesca and Robert.
This was a deep, moving love story about a traveling photographer and a lonely farm wife. Their brief affair was never portrayed as sordid, but one where two soul mates met at the wrong time in their lives. Therefore, I chose a rich, deep Merlot to indulge in while curling up near a crackling fireplace and diving into The Bridges of Madison County.
Wine and book pairings
wine and book imageWho says we can’t enjoy a glass of wine while reading our romance books? No one. Wine pairs well with cheese, steak, seafood, and fruit. Heck, now there are wine pairings for cookies. So, why not with books?
So here are just a few thoughts on how I see wine and books being enjoyed together. Of course, you can experiment with your own combinations. And please share your results! We all want to know your fun and daring side. (BTW – if wine isn’t your thing, play around with hot chocolate, or any other beverage. Share with us!
Sweet wines will make that fun, contemporary read much lighter. Laughter will flow from the heroine and you all throughout her story. She is light-hearted and exciting and just wants you to have fun. Of course, her hero is always getting in the way and causing mischief. She needs wine to deal with him and his crazy antics. Indulge in the sweetness of Moscato or Zinfandel.
For the IMG_3491intense suspenseful romance, I would suggest something with a little bite. Those intriguing moments will have you gripping your glass as well as the edge of your seat. Danger lurks around every corner. But your heroine is strong and feisty and needs the boldness of a rich Pinot Grigio or Merlot to deal with the man claiming to be her hero.
Prefer the enticing read of pure romance with a lot of physical interaction between the characters? I believe that would either be a Chardonnay or Malbec for the daring actions, and maybe a Port or Riesling when things are tame. Mix it up a little.
Sweet, sensual, spicy, bold, dry… There are many different wines to fit your palette and style. You don’t have to settle for just one. As we go along, we will dive into all aspects of wine – tannins, taste, reds and whites, and the dreaded wine headache – lol. I have a lot in store for you.
~~~~ Now that I’ve made these brief introductions to wine and book pairings, I will venture into sharing with you books I’ve either read, or am interested in reading, and the wines I will enjoy while getting my book-boyfriend, romance-read fix. And please share your recommendations on either books or wines. I will report back to you all. Be sure to follow my blog so you can get notified when I post something new. Happy Valentine’s Day!!

loveFebruary – the month of LOVE. February 14th – the day of LOVE.

Do you celebrate Valentines’ Day? Is it just another day, or is it a required holiday for you? Me, meh – it all depends. One Valentine’s Day my best friend and I were out of town the entire weekend at a women’s retreat. Yes, we left our hubbies at home alone. At the time it worked. This year, since Valentine’s Day is on a Tuesday, I will be at work. Hubby will be home, and we will probably get a little something for each other. A card, maybe some chocolates, a hand picked flower out of the garden. Whether we are together or apart, the love that binds us is all that matters.

I hope you have a wonderful day, filled with whatever makes you happy. Flowers, candy, cards, hearts, snuggle time, whatever… Find your pleasure!!

Love, hugs, and kisses – Taylor

Nothing worth having comes easy…

nothing-worth-having-comes-easyTrue in every sense. No matter what you are after in life, short term or long term, you have to work for it. Your dream will not simply fall into your lap. There will be ups and downs along the way. That is all part of the process.

Celebrate those victories – That email from a client or publisher, that encouraging message from a friend, finishing the rough draft you’ve been working on – no matter how small they may seem, these are part of the bigger picture that will help you obtain your goal. These are only a few of the little achievements that push us forward; keep us moving.

Embrace the pitfalls – The dreaded rejection letter, a bad review, not meeting a deadline – these are the obstacles that discourage us. Embrace the moment; have the pity party. Then suck it up and move on. Learn from these instances.

A personal story: This four-day weekend was my planning time for 2017. I was going to lay out the calendar, schedule some blogs, make contacts, etc. Yeah, no, that didn’t happen. Four days wasted because of a hurt arm. I was in so much pain and nauseated, that I had to resort to the pain pills prescribed by the Urgent Care doctor. That put me in a la-la-land cycle for three full days. Wake up, move around a little, eat, take meds, fall asleep, wake up and do it all over again. There just wasn’t anything in me that remotely wanted to open my computer or notebook and get cracking on this new year. Today, finally, a little relief. With my arm propped up on pillows, I figured now was as good a time to get started as Friday would have been.

The reason I tell you this story – Nothing worth having comes easy… No matter what your goal / dream is, and no matter what your obstacles are, you can push through it and achieve what is yours. Claim it. The setbacks will come. Get through them and cheer with the accomplishments! Best wishes to you in 2017!
